Portrait of Prof. Ulrich Braukämper

Aethiopica Journal Published an Article Celebrating the Life and Work of Ulrich Braukämper

Prof. Ulrich Braukämper passed away in October 2018. At the time I published an article on this website reporting the unfortunate news of his untimely passing. His scholarship in the study of the Hadiya people of Ethiopia remains unsurpassed.

This quote from my news article summarized well the sentiment at the time:

He was the most generous man in scholarly work I have ever seen in any field. It seems that the Hadiya will only know posthumously what he meant to its history and culture.  He never got the credit he deserved from the nation he worked so hard to put on the world map.  There are certainly a few individuals who did.  I am certain his work will serve as input to further Hadiya scholarship for a very long time to come.

Ulrich Braukämper has been a member of editorial board of Aethiopica International Journal of Ethiopian and Eritrean Studies from year 2006 until his death. His home journal has published 1 an article celebrating his life and work by Jon Abbink (another prolific scholar in Ethiopian studies.) I have shared the PDF of the article here to our community in addition to citing it in the note section below.

  1. Abbink, J. 2019. In memoriam Ulrich Braukämper (1944–2018) Aethiopica 22 (2019) 246–252. DOI:https://doi.org/10.15460/aethiopica.22.0.1500.
